Acharya vs Shastri: Understanding the Vedic Scholarly Hierarchy

The distinction matters more than most families realise

A Shastri has completed formal study of the Shastras, typically a graduate degree from a Sanskrit university, and is qualified to conduct domestic samskaras such as Satyanarayan Katha, Mundan and Griha Pravesh.

An Acharya carries an advanced qualification and, in practice, the authority to lead multi-ritvik anushthans. For an Ati Rudra Mahayagya or a Navchandi, the Acharya sets the sankalp, distributes the aavartans among the ritviks and rules on any procedural question.

Choosing for your ceremony

• Domestic puja under three hours: a Shastri is entirely appropriate
• Vivah, Vastu Shanti, Navgraha Shanti: an Acharya or senior Shastri
• Any yagya requiring five or more ritviks: an Acharya must preside
